Group Goal

I know I don't have to share this but I want to know what some of you think.  I downloaded the Lose it app on my phone and for me to meet my weightloss goals I could only eat 1200 calories a day.  I am nursing a baby and have a somewhat higher than normal metabolism.  I did a practice day today and logged my calories to see just how much 1287 calories is.  It's not much.  I used them all up by my afternoon snack (and I ate fairly healthy food).  I was thinking of putting my calorie goal at 2000.  This may not be extra helpful with losing weight but I need to feed my baby and I want to participate in the challenge without setting a goal that is way too easy.  Does anyone have experience with counting calories and nursing?

  1. The calorie counter that I looked up http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm
Has a breastfeeding option and sugested calorie intake.

  2. I use myfitnesspal.com and it has options for nursing. If you're nursing fully (no supplements) they estimate an extra 500 calories per day, less when the baby starts to eat solids.

  4. I have no experience with nursing, but I do have experience with 1200 calories per day. No one should drop that low without being under a doctor's and/or dietician's supervision. You are right...it's not much. The ONLY reason my doctor doesn't rebuke me for doing it is because I go in every 3 months for blood work and I go to my dietician every month with my food journal in hand so she can make sure I'm getting the nutrition my body needs. Even so...there are days I feel like I'm going to pass out. That's why when I am restricting calories that much I have to eat every 2-3 hours. Anyone who cuts their calories that low needs to have some medical supervision. I can't imagine doing that while breast feeding - that's barely enough calories for one person let alone two people.

  5. I agree with Heidi, you need medical supervision to be on that low of a calorie intake and definitely not while breastfeeding. Adding 500-600 calories to your daily intake is average for a nursing mom. And yes, you can still lose weight while breastfeeding!
