What can I say? Last week was brutal for me emotionally because I was PMSy. You know, that time when you can't use will power to talk yourself out of a larger portion, or 5 Rolo's, or eating a late night snack. I hate those weeks but realized something that I think we all think sometimes. That is that I think willpower ALONE will help me be and do what I want. I assume, falsely, that willpower will actually power me through hormones, or a bad day or week or year and keep me from having to just be conscious about what I am eating and how I am treating my body.
This just is NOT how will power works. Willpower is a great kindling to a the fire of changed habits and mindsets that will sustain and light the way through the abyss that is hormones and well life.
Last week I allowed myself, within reason (what that means I am not even sure) to eat whatever and exercised minimally but stayed active and slept. I lost a whole POUND! I was a bit dumbfounded but then I really thought about it and decided maybe my body needed a break just like my willpower did. I decided to take a step back and make some solid, feasible, and most importantly REALISTIC goals about my overall health for my life. One of those goals is to NEVER take my health for granted but NEVER relay on willpower alone. I don't know if this makes much sense but I had a lot of thoughts this week and last and wanted to share.
This week I hope to lose and do well but also rely more on changed habits and outlook rather than my rather inconsistent willpower.
I hope this week finds you in a renewed sense of purpose and reason for getting healthy.
I get what you mean. We can't simply make up our mind to do something and expect that it will be enough. It's a step, but it takes practice making those healthy choices over and over, or getting up to exercise even when the night went horribly or we're tired or it's cold. When we keep choosing those things, it becomes our norm and our willpower will help us uphold the changes we've made.
