My "weird" personal challenge

This week I opted to wander off my beaten path and try something a little new for my personal challenge.

I decided to go 'no poo for my hair and use the oil cleansing method for my face.

For the uninitiated, "no 'poo" means no shampoo.  Before you gross out and resolve to give me a 10 foot radius let me explain.  Yes, it means I won't be using shampoo to wash my hair, but it doesn't mean I won't clean my hair.  I had already cut back on shampooing my hair in the last several months - I would shampoo my hair about 3 times a week.  That seemed to be going well so I decided to take it farther.

There are several methods to the no 'poo movement, but I chose the most common - the baking soda and apple cider vinegar method as demonstrated here -

So far I've washed my hair once in this way, and it wasn't bad at all!

Next, the oil cleansing method is exactly what it says - you wash your face with oil.  That might sound counterproductive, since you wash your face to get rid of oil (and dirt, and makeup...)  But the oil cleansing method is great for some of the same reasons that the baking soda and acv method is - you're not using harsh soaps to strip away healthy oils that your body actually needs.

Crunchy Betty has a GREAT explanation of why it works, why it's awesome for every skin type, and what kinds and ratios of oils to use depending on your skin type.

This isn't my first rodeo with the oil cleansing method - I just got lazy and got away from it, but loved how it made my skin look and feel and decided to go back.  (ps, I have very oily skin, and this method did NOT make my skin oilier)

The reason I decided to start doing these as my personal challenge is because I wanted to get back to basics.   I've been working on getting back to basics on the foods I eat by eating things closer to their natural state, and I wanted to start doing the same for some of my beauty products.  A little hippy dippy?  Yep.  But I good with that!

  1. Interesting. When I actually "do" my hair I can make it last an extra day... Sometimes two. This is a very intriguing philosophy. I will have to mull this over for a while. Can you imagine mark seeing me trying either of these methods?! Ha! He would think I went way off the deep end! :) maybe i should try it just for the reaction... Ha!

  2. My Mom has actually been doing this for years now. The thought of putting vinegar in has made me a little hesitant, but knowing that someone my age is doing it makes me a little more willing to give it a shot. Thanks for posting this!
